| The T S Eliot Prize Shortlist Readings |
|
On Sunday 23 January 2011, the eve of the judges’ decision, the T S Eliot Prize Readings will be staged at the Southbank’s Royal Festival Hall. All ten poets are invited to read from their shortlisted collections, making the Readings a unique opportunity to hear the best contemporary poets reading their own work. The judging panel this year, chaired by Anne Stevenson with Michael Symmons Roberts and Bernardine Evaristo, have a strong shortlist to choose from - collections by Simon Armitage (last year's chair of the judges and Tower Poetry judge in 2008), Annie Freud, John Haynes, Seamus Heaney (who, sadly, will not be reading), Pascale Petit, Robin Robertson, Fiona Sampson, Brian Turner, Derek Walcott and Sam Willetts. Expect an electric atmosphere as we count down to the announcement of the winner of poetry’s biggest prize. Tickets from the Southbank Centre (0844 875 0073; or www.southbankcentre.co.uk). |
About Tower Poetry
Tower Poetry exists to encourage and challenge everyone who reads or writes poetry. Funded by a generous bequest to Christ Church, Oxford, by the late Christopher Tower, the aims of Tower Poetry are clear: to stimulate an enjoyment and critical appreciation of poetry, particularly among young people in education, and to challenge people to write their own poetry. Creative writing should be a central element in literary education, and learning about writing poetry can help students to think about ways of reading poetry.
