AN ARGUMENT AT THE CHOW HALL

Why not eat with your silverware? Chaplain
Cruce asked the corporal. ‘Wild animals
don’t have no silverware.’ Spaghetti handfuls
went plate to mouth and Cruce watched all the men.

Is this behavior your doing, Staff Sergeant?
A shrug. ‘Utensils only separate
you from the food that’s set there on your plate.’
And ‘Eating with a knife just makes it blunt.’

Your folks, they raise you up this callous and cold?
Or did the Army training make you this way?
‘My mother’s loins, as you should know, Padre.
I was conceived in sin, or so I was told.’

It’s true, the Chaplain rolled his eyes.
‘Then why pretend? Why act so civilised?’
