Longlisted Poem 2015

Maths Homework

Oh, how it dreamed
Of colour, that  pallid page,
Straining  to breathe beneath
The corset  of criss-crossed lines
Iron bars, but one page thick.

Black BIC Biro
And my mind working,
I imprisoned the numbers:
Lined
Up
Dark
Shapes,
Silhouetted against the white
Silence of their cells.
Oh, how they dreamed of colour;
To cut themselves free
Of the confines.
But my mind was elsewhere as I closed
The book, and the first dark dusk
Descended  on them.
