Longlisted Poem 2013

Catherine McManus

St Mary’s College, Blackburn

If the bath is overflowing on the tiles, my Love,
Or the curtain prevents light upon the stairs;
If the bed in mourning black remains unmade, my Love,
Or the bound-in-silver books have ceased to care;
If the unplugged telephone is in denial, my Love,
Or the carpet is all scattered with my hair;
If the plants obscure the garden into shade, my Love,
Or the only fire in the hearth is of despair;
Know your absence is felt from the top to the floors,
And the sun doesn’t shine in this house anymore.
