Longlisted Poem 2014
Huntington School, York
Not Happened Yet.
Brief glance, novels in sentences.
Demarcation defining life. The ‘flash’;
Your brief pity, sincere condolences.
Car crash. Not happened yet.
Stars seethe but the Lord’s intransigent
Breaking headlines is such a grind.
Stories of stories sate our heart’s content
But we forget those stories left behind.
The vultures are crooning, the toothless acquiesce.
To their crimes unspoken. Who’s to blame?
A slap on the wrist probably best,
This slanderous libel does defame.
It comes, meandering, tingling, whistling.
Striking out: is this good news?
Someone somewhere, ears open, listening.
Extinguished in seconds. Not happened yet.
The child on the penultimate page, on fire.
Forgotten as if awaking from a dream,
Destitute and desperate, denigrated and dire.
‘Are you listening?’, no one hears it seems.
Live feed. I smile. Turn over.
It’s not happened yet.
