Longlisted Poem 2014

Ebba Brunnström

St Paul’s Girls’ School, London

Paper boy

They’ll paint you in black and white
press you between the pages of heavy books,
wrinkling between the folds,
until they can trace maps back over your skin
through the whorls in your fingernails
maybe they’ll roll you up in a bottle
see how the sand smooths you
pearl-soft, fish-white
paper in the waves.
We wouldn’t have been friends in school but
I feel like I know you
singing in the shower
driving at night
looking up at a skyfull
of blinking oysters,
too much of a jumble to be fixed
between columns
but they painted you in black and white:
black rocks
white sky
white skin and black eyes.
