Longlisted Poem 2012

When in Italy

In the harbour, he stood there
to hold my dress billowing in the wind.
Bitter breeze, on your wings

return me to Italy,
her towering lighthouse, its sun
calling out to the sea.

His fleet floated out
and my eyes swept into
his green whirlpools.

Return me to Italy,
her towering lighthouse, its sun
calling out to the sea.

She’s a becalmed ocean
of marooned memories.
My heart heaved,

I hear only her bitter breeze,
her towering lighthouse, its sun
calling out to the sea.

His soul a solitary warship.
Bitter breeze,
on your wings,

return me to Italy,
her towering lighthouse, its sun
crying into the sea.
