Longlisted Poem 2014

Haroun Hameed

Alleyn’s School, London

yesterday’s news

in the spoken corners
of each word i christen
lie cobwebs of you.

like cruel etymologies,
tracts unretracted
in the wide, draughty rooms,

your nets catch my tongue’s
tractable root.
theirs are stories we both left

unfinished.
your doorframe’s mane of jasmine
has silvered into silk, and now

asks recompense in mayflies
for any light past openings
chanced to steal.

i only return
these leased notes,
these echoes –

the Word we began with, grown grey.
