Longlisted Poem 2012

Hope Kemp

Reigate College, Surrey

Once upon a time
She breathed gold

She would build sandcastles, light fireworks
Do anything for a smile
Leaping out of bed and singing at the morning
She giggled playground rhymes

The sun shone hot that summer
Kaleidoscopes blazed her skin
She was beautiful and danced so fearlessly
Thrown into the wind

Screaming, her hair entwined around the darkness
Shine vanished from her eyes
Insecurity and maturity glazing, whispering
Her newfound teenage mind

My head roars as my heart pounds
I am a different girl now
The world unveils its true colours
But I will infinitely breathe gold

Recklessly, shamelessly and impulsively
I am sailing through the storms
On this voyage
I will show you my electrifying forms.
