Longlisted Poem 2015

Hope Supple

Surbiton High School, Kingston upon Thames, Surrey

Small room

the snagged neck bends and dips
shielding from the dripping isosceles of bright white
that scorns and teases and sours lips
as eyes are clamped shut – dry and flaky
lips are bitten by yellowing, harrowed teeth

lily-livered, fraught and catching
stained zephyr, unmoving and inhaling again
recycling the stale-worn air out, in
in this small room

hope divided and multiplies with each
crinkled fold of skin, unbruised
and time continues to tick and the bright white
fades and calls, and the clamped eyes
dry, and bitten lips, which curl around an empty cup
in this
small room
