The Building Blocks of Life

The building blocks of life
Divide and multiply,
Until eventually,
They damage, then die –
Sacrificing themselves
To form her cordial arms,
The blood in her veins
And the smile she wears
Like a Christmas present
Wrapped in red wrapping paper.

They expand and replicate,
Then, like imploding stars,
Shatter and disintegrate.
They craft her glowing eyes
And wedding veil
Of brushed hair.
They stroke warm creases
Into her worn skin
And form the bones that carry her
From her armchair to our sofa.

The building blocks of life
Divide and multiply,
Until eventually,
They damage, then multiply again.
Spreading silently,
They form the lump in her throat,
The tremor in her hand
And the tear
In her wrapping paper smile.
