Longlisted Poem 2015
St Joseph’s Grammar School, Donaghmore, County Tyrone, Northern Ireland
The door seals shut, a horrid rattle
Locked up, I fight my losing battle
Of too many gasping breaths that drown
And a slamming heart to beat hope down.
While icy tremors shake the bars
I tear open once healed scars
My thoughts, like thorns dig sharply in,
Unspoken fears a roaring din.
Anxiety’s strength a potent hell,
I am alone to feel the sick dread swell.
Flapping on a fish hook of fear
This panic’s prison is all that’s clear,
With sudden strength its fingers grip
Sweat damp skin to seal my lips.
What can I do? I know too well
That I locked myself inside this cell.
