Longlisted Poem 2015

Katie Mennis

Single-celled

I know that we will meet like cells, simple
and too small to dream up, but swollen
like the nibs of fountain pens about to splurt

at a touch. We’ll coalesce like marbles kiss
and I will gain the power of a microscope
to shine my light through a single cell
of a slide becoming a stained-glass window.

When we osmose, like two blind droplets
trickling into the figure of an unbroken
wishbone on a shower door, single-
souled before but now somehow symbolic,
then I’ll know two types of love.
