Longlisted Poem 2014

Kirsten Chapman

Gillingham School, Dorset

It has been raining for over a month now

It has been raining for over a month now
Pale humps swell in the fields, the roads
are in a state of constant slickness
Water pushes up in shivering mounds
that pockmark gravel drives

The papers are saturated
with talk of dredging, of what should be or
what should have been done
It feels somewhat obsolete
under this cloud-swollen faceless sky

There is a mill, not far from here
that was gutted by fire
several years ago
I went there, hoping for equilibrium
but its beams had tipped
into rotten
Once charred and brittle wood
crumpled listlessly in my palm

To turn on the radio, the television
is to learn of another river
that has burst its banks
The constant taste of water unbalances me
