Longlisted Poem 2014

Missing

Faces, chases, fades to traces,
searching for a sign, hope,
to get parents to forge through the
tough times, to cope.

The disbelief, tangible in the air,
holding hands, the next minute,
Gone. Stolen.
Weeping, weeping.

They’re tasting salty tears, on the tongue,
mouth parted for words
yet to come, from the heart as
cameras, microphones are shoved at them.

On the other side,
his attention, fixed
through all the chaos,
looking through a screen, anonymous.

Behind his eyes,
is a reason, believed by only himself,
Captured by the victim’s beauty;
her golden hair, still glowing.

Places, packed cases, his oasis,
bathing in victory, temporary
is what everyone prays for, but he
is content, to her not scary. Never scary.
