Longlisted Poem 2012

The Old Trains

The trains heave through the dark
The disintegrating dark
And ghosts on the tracks are lit up by the sparks
And ghosts on the tracks are lit up by the sparks.

Shudder to a start
Fatten up my fast
of dry death-rattled morning air
Phantasmagorical fast, half-gorged
on hypnotic, heart-beating steel on steel

Apart from people, I see no people.

In the pits of this starving animal
is thunder
From the windows and the wheels
It squeals in its skin and

We stop. A human breathes,
A moment of space evaporates
While it holds its breath
in the dark

Exhale, and shudder on.
Apart from people, I see no people.
Shudder on, and tremble.

*

There is no end
The dark in here and the dark out there
The dark out there
Small windows of light
Spinning away on the black like
Submarines in the black-blue sea
When the white – white! – spit of sparks
voicelessly crashes to death
Shudder on, and tremble.

The leaving lasts forever.
And you heave towards it and you’re emptied out and
you must go back
you must go back

And the trains heave through the dark
The disintegrating dark
And ghosts on the tracks are lit up by the sparks
And ghosts on the tracks…
