One Saturday after the Election
The worst thing is how life carries on:
Prime Minister’s Questions, roadworks, unpaid bills.
How the listless Thames empties, and then fills.
How newspapers get printed. Work gets done.
How the whole mortgaged river drains away
Like so much disappointment, so much weather,
So much short-lived, human endeavour:
While I paint window-frames the whole fucking day
In a white gloss. No texts. No emails. No news.
Look! Lambeth sprawls its unplanned emptiness
Behind me, as I work. Jesus, if this
Is winning, how does it feel to lose?
