Longlisted Poem 2012

Postcolonial

And will we reach the stars:
And will we fight with sticks and stones
In playgrounds made from distant moons:
And will we still be watchers of the skies,
Or more alike to stout Cortez: governors
Of brittle rings and bitter asteroids,
Selling stardust to the highest bidder;
Scraping life from rocks that have ached for sun,
First into test tubes for our inspection,
Soon into gaping human mouths,
Protesting for their daily bread?
Is that when we return?
