Longlisted Poem 2012

Philippa Downs

Woldingham School, Surrey

We travel on.

We travel on, the distance vast.
The captain knows morale is low,
The sea and sky scarcely contrast.

At first the days, they travelled fast,
Then rumours shocked the men below.
We travel on, the distance vast.

The question whispered, never asked.
Swift answers dance; the sailors row.
The sea and sky scarcely contrast.

The eyes are made of opaque glass.
And colour drains out of high bows.
We travel on, the distance vast.

One solitary man outcast,
The lonely boy the last to know;
The sea and sky scarcely contrast.

Bitter play with a broken cast,
The script to the depths of the sea we throw.
We travel on, the distance vast.
The sea and sky scarcely contrast.
