Longlisted Poem 2013
Benenden School, Kent
My Daughter’s Mother
Inspired by ‘Message from an Unknown Chinese Mother’ by Xue Xinran
The only photograph I have
of my daughter’s mother
is ripped in the top right corner:
I imagine her in rural China;
bent double in a tea field, a part of her lost.
She has worn skin and yellow teeth
and hums, to pass the hours away.
Her slanted eyes are like my daughter’s,
but mine are round.
