Longlisted Poem 2013
The West Somerset Community College, Minehead, Somerset
The End-of-the-world Dress
I would have worn it for you,
That luxurious map of my contours.
The silk rich as paint.
But after your cancellation came
I stayed up to watch the news.
They smirked it first
God-botherers intoned it second
I tried the words out loud; third.
The apocalypse was the best thing that ever happened to me.
I ordered my affairs,
Filed bank statements,
Left a letter on the breakfast bar.
You didn’t answer your phone (but I didn’t expect you to)
I wore it with my mother’s pearls,
My eyes darkened with soot like lustre.
Then diamante heels still on,
I slept the slumber of a well loved child.
And woke up crying.
