THE TATTOOS OF STAFF SERGEANT LINDEN
My men aren’t bodybuilders like in films:
if Audie Murphy’s brave, they aren’t that brave,
and judging by their talk they’re all depraved:
I’d be surprised if any sang church hymns.
You know the horse built by the Greeks to win
that ancient war? My joes wouldn’t think of that.
When I ask what they’ve been aiming at
when they’re behind the gun, they shrug and grin.
I love to hear their jokes about zombies
and the apocalypse. But my son makes
me laugh harder. Stuff he says. I miss
him. This lot make me sick, their ugly faces.
And yet I swear that these men are so rare
I had their names inked here, and here, and here.
